I saw a post over a year ago asking if people could knit or crochet without looking. “Of course knitting!” I thought, then scrolled through the comments.
It was 50/50 on which one people said they could do without looking (and also MANY people who said they couldn’t do either without looking : )
Why can I knit without looking but can’t crochet without looking?
Even though I learned crochet first (as an 8-year-old from my grandma!), I have spent a lot more time knitting. I have put in the time to make it automatic.
My guess is that is true for those who can crochet without looking.
Also, the reality is there is plenty of knitting I do where I do have to look.
Hence, it depends.
From my experience teaching others, crochet is often easier to get started with, which can be really rewarding and encouraging for beginners.
Knitting is easier to complete a project—once you know just one stitch, the knit stitch, you can make all sorts of things!
What is the difference?
Knitting: Uses 2 (or more) needles with multiple “live” stitches on them.

Crochet: Uses 1 hook with one “live” stitch you work with at a time.

Students often ask me “Which one do you like better?”
Again: It depends
I like the look and drape of knitting for pieces of clothing
I like the versatility of crochet to create small objects and animals
I particularly like combining them! Using crochet to create a border on a knit item or to connect pieces of a blanket together, for example.
