One of the things I love about spending time with children is the way they look at the world.
This idea was echoed in a book I recently listened to:
“If life ever seems too complicated,
if you think no one can help,
sometimes the right person to turn to is an eight-year-old.”

While teaching a mom and her two children a crochet lesson, I heard great wisdom from her daughter.
Her fingers were working away on a floppy bunny ear she is making for a friend. Her brother was working on his third pea for a peas in a pod design he selected. They were musing on how sometimes things turn out differently than anticipated.
The brother: “This looks like an acorn, not a pea because I changed colors.”
The sister: “Sometimes things start out being one thing and then they turn into something else. Like this, I think I’m making a bunny. But, it could turn out to be a {insert no pause or hesitation} a wombat!”
{insert lots of laughter from all four of us}
The mom: “That is not at all what I expected you to say!”
{more laughter}
I wish I had pictures of those lovely creations to share – and while I don’t, I do have another example. This tendency to for projects to start out as one thing and morph into something else often comes up in my classes.
Like this mother-daughter pair who started out with the same pattern – a whale, and ended up with two beautiful, very different, creations.
It is so fun to see creativity at work.
I’m grateful that I get to be reminded regularly that it’s all in how you look at it. And that we don’t have to be upset if we don’t end up with a bunny, instead we can just enjoy our wombat!
